It all began at SEA
I’m José «El Moreno,» president of the Club, and I discovered surfing one sunny day when I was just 16 years old on San Juan Beach in Alicante. From the moment I surfed my first wave, something inside me changed forever.
In the water, I found a feeling that’s hard to explain: freedom, calm, truth.
Since then, the sea has become an essential part of my life.
Long before I ever got on a surfboard, I was already spending hours on a skateboard. I grew up among ramps, curbs, and streets of Alicante, practicing skateboarding and immersing myself in that culture with the same intensity as youthful passions, without knowing that they would stay with me for life. Years later, that connection would continue to be fundamental to my understanding of surfing and also to the philosophy of the club.
However, life doesn’t always follow the path one feels inside.
Durante varios años, trabajé en el Registro de la Propiedad de Alicante, siguiendo el legado familiar y forjando una vida estable. Era un empleo serio, seguro y muy respetado; un estilo de vida que, a simple vista, parecía estar bien encaminado.
Y por un tiempo, así fue.
Sin embargo, en el fondo, había algo que no lograba satisfacerme del todo.
Mientras cumplía con mis responsabilidades diarias, sentía que una parte de mí pertenecía al mar. Las olas me llamaban y, en cada momento libre, buscaba el Mediterráneo para encontrar una paz que no encontraba en ningún otro lugar.
After a serious surfing accident, I spent a whole year unable to enjoy the waves. Shortly after, I discovered stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), a new way to maintain my connection with the sea. I paddled along the Alicante coast, exploring caves, hidden coves, and cliffs inaccessible by land. These peaceful and wild places became an essential part of my life.
After the accident, I decided my life had to change so I could be closer to the sea.
The change was probably one of the hardest decisions of my life, because some passions don’t disappear even if you try to follow a different path.
Leaving stability and a secure future to dedicate myself to surfing wasn’t easy. There was fear, doubt, and family expectations. However, I realized that I didn’t want to distance myself from what made me happy, and I decided to change my life to live closer to the sea, to teaching, and to a lifestyle I’ve felt since my teens, since that day I surfed my first wave at San Juan beach in Alicante.
From then on, surfing ceased to be just a passion and became my way of connecting with nature. For decades, I traveled the Alicante coast with my friends, searching for waves, exploring every corner of the Mediterranean, and witnessing the evolution of surfing in Alicante from its very beginnings. I also traveled for years to legendary places like Indonesia and Lanzarote.
It was in Lanzarote that I spent the next eight winters with my wife, Noelia, and our Labrador, Nira. On this beautiful island, I continued to evolve as a surfer, feeling a profound connection with the ocean. Without a doubt, it was an experience that reaffirmed that all changes have a purpose.
Now surfing, besides being my passion, would be my lifestyle.
All this history, all these years, and all these experiences are now the heart of El Moreno Alicante Surf Club.
This club was born from a life dedicated to the sea. From someone who decided to leave security behind to dedicate themselves to what truly made them feel alive.
And perhaps that’s why those who know me not only learn to surf, but also understand that, sometimes, life’s true wave arises when one dares to change course.
